Remote Work Gains Ground at Local Firms
MERIDIAN CITY (October 12) – A growing number of businesses in the region are allowing employees to work from home at least two days a week. According to a survey by the Meridian Chamber of Commerce, 62 percent of local companies now offer some form of flexible scheduling, 143 35 percent five years ago.
Managers say the change has 144 several benefits. Workers spend less time commuting, and companies need fewer desks in their offices. 145 Some have even given up part of their leased space and saved thousands of dollars each month.
However, not everyone is convinced. Dr. Priya Raman, who studies workplace behavior at Kellner University, warns that teams can lose their sense of unity if they rarely meet in person. She recommends that firms schedule regular on-site days so that employees can 146 strong relationships with their colleagues.

Rafael Duarte (9:15 A.M.): Thanks. What about the client meeting? Is it still at 11:00?
Shirin Malik (9:17 A.M.): It was moved to 11:30. Mr. Vance’s flight is delayed. I’ll wait for you in the lobby with the printed contracts.
Rafael Duarte (9:18 A.M.): Perfect. I should reach the hotel by 10:00 and will change my shirt first.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
The Marlowe Inn, Eastgate – reviewed by Jun Takeda, October 3
I stayed at the Marlowe Inn for four nights while attending a regional hiring fair at the nearby convention center. The location was ideal, only a five-minute walk from the main hall. The staff were helpful, and the front desk quickly arranged an early check-in when my train arrived at dawn.
My room was spotless and quiet, though the desk was too small for working on a laptop. The Wi-Fi was fast in the lobby but dropped frequently on the third floor. Breakfast was simple but fresh, and the coffee was excellent.
The only real disappointment was the price: I paid extra for a “business package” that was supposed to include free printing, but the printer in the lobby was out of order for two of my four days. I mentioned this at checkout, and the manager kindly refunded part of the fee. I would stay here again, but I would skip the package.

Kestrel Systems to Move Headquarters to Dunmore
DUNMORE (April 8) – Kestrel Systems, a maker of office scheduling software, announced yesterday that it will relocate its headquarters from Bayfield to the Dunmore Business Park by next spring. [1] The move will bring about 400 jobs to the town, according to chief executive Marguerite Vo.
“Our staff has doubled in four years, and our current building can no longer hold everyone,” Ms. Vo said. [2] The new campus will include a day-care center, a fitness room, and a large cafeteria. It will also have meeting rooms equipped for video conferencing with the company’s branches overseas.
Dunmore Mayor Henry Castellano welcomed the news. “Kestrel Systems will be a valuable neighbor,” he said. [3] City officials have promised to extend the bus line to the park by January. A new road is also being built to reduce traffic on Main Street.
Not all employees are pleased, however. Many of those who live in Bayfield will face a commute of nearly an hour. [4] The company says it will provide a shuttle service twice daily and is considering offering flexible working hours.
